The SUMITOMO 5UHY217 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding industrial and machining environments. Ground to a 135-degree split-point geometry, it delivers fast penetration and self-centering entry without a pilot hole. The bit carries a dual-layer TiAlCr and TiSi coating that resists heat and abrasion at elevated cutting speeds. At 9.5 mm in diameter with a 105 mm overall length and a 58 mm flute length, it is built for through-hole and blind-hole drilling in ferrous materials. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary installers.
This bit is engineered for cutting cast iron and steel, covering primary workpiece material codes K and P. Its 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio makes it well suited for moderate-depth holes in production machining, CNC drilling centers, and manual machine shop applications. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 10 mm in diameter and 45 mm in length, fitting standard drill chucks and collet holders in that bore range. It belongs to the MDW-GS series and targets applications where tool life and hole quality in hard ferrous stock are priorities.
Designed for use in cast iron and steel workpieces (material codes K and P) across CNC and manual drilling applications. Compatible with standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 10 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Part of the SUMITOMO MDW-GS series, sized within the 9.00 mm to 10.00 mm drill bit diameter range.
Installation and setup should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with carbide tooling requirements. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to lateral loading. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing or inspecting the bit. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so adequate external coolant or air blast should be used to manage heat during extended cuts.
