The SUMITOMO 5UHY212 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting applications. It features a 9.00 mm diameter with a straight cylindrical shank of equal 9.00 mm diameter and a 135-degree split-point geometry that reduces walking and improves centering on entry. The drill carries a multi-layer TiAlCr and TiSi proprietary coating that extends tool life when cutting steel, stainless steel, and hardened materials. Overall length is 3.858 inches (98.00 mm) with a flute length of 2.165 inches (55.00 mm). This is a two-flute design with a tapered web configuration, classified as a high-performance grade tool in the MDW-GS series.
The 5UHY212 is suited for machine-shop, production, and maintenance applications where steel and stainless steel are the primary workpiece materials. The 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio makes it appropriate for moderate-depth through-holes in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual mill setups. Its h8 shank diameter tolerance ensures consistent tool holding in standard collet chucks and hydraulic holders. Hardened materials are listed as a supported workpiece category, making this drill a practical option for tool rooms working with treated or alloy steels.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and conventional drilling equipment with standard straight-shank tool holders. Compatible with workpiece materials coded K and P, corresponding to steel and stainless steel classifications. Part of the Sumitomo MDW-GS series for high-performance solid carbide drilling.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool-and-die professional. Ensure the tool holder is clean and free of chips before seating the shank, and torque set-screw or collet nut to the holder manufacturer specification. Verify spindle speed and feed rate against the MDW-GS series cutting data for the target workpiece material before engaging the cut. No coolant-through capability is present on this drill; use external flood or mist coolant as appropriate for the material and depth.
