Product Description

The SUMITOMO 5UHY182 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for precision metal cutting in demanding production and maintenance environments. Built to Series MDW-GS specifications, it features a 135-degree drill point angle for self-centering entry and reduced thrust force on hard workpiece materials. The bit carries a dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating that extends tool life at elevated cutting temperatures. At 81 mm overall length with a 41 mm flute length and a 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio, it delivers chip evacuation and rigidity suited to through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and toolroom professionals will recognize this geometry as standard for interrupted and continuous cuts in cast iron and steel.

The 5UHY182 is rated for primary workpiece materials classified under ISO material codes K and P, covering cast iron and steel. Its straight-cylindrical shank at 6 mm diameter seats directly into standard drill chucks, collet holders, and hydraulic toolholders without adapters. The 135-degree split-point geometry makes it suitable for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-held power tools where precise entry and minimal walking are priorities. Coolant-through capability is not provided on this model, so external flood or mist coolant is recommended when drilling deeper holes or harder alloys.

Key Features

  • Solid carbide construction for rigidity and heat resistance in metal-cutting applications
  • TiAlCr and TiSi dual coating for extended tool life at high surface speeds
  • 135-degree drill point angle promotes self-centering and lowers entry thrust force
  • Straight-cylindrical shank at 6 mm diameter fits standard collet and chuck toolholding
  • Tapered web configuration supports chip flow and reduces torque load
  • h8 diameter tolerance for consistent fit and repeatable hole size

Compatibility

Designed for metal-cutting operations on cast iron and steel workpieces, consistent with ISO material group codes K and P. Fits standard 6 mm straight-shank toolholding systems including drill chucks, ER collets, and hydraulic holders.

Installation Notes

Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the spindle fully stopped and machine power isolated. Confirm shank seating depth and runout with a dial indicator before first use, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to lateral shock. Apply external flood or mist coolant when operating at higher feeds and speeds or when drilling deep holes, since this bit does not have internal coolant-through passages. Follow the machine tool manufacturer recommended speeds and feeds for carbide tooling in the target workpiece material.
