The SUMITOMO 5L00W0N is a replaceable-tip drill designed for precision hole-making in metalworking applications. Built on the SMD series platform, it accepts SMDT-style inserts and delivers an 8xD depth-to-diameter ratio, allowing a maximum drill depth of 6.654 inches. The 1-inch whistle notch shank provides positive rotational drive in compatible SMDH-style toolholders. Through-coolant capability channels cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, supporting chip evacuation and extended insert life during deep-hole operations. The steel body construction keeps overall weight manageable at 1.1 pounds. This drill is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling professionals in production and job-shop environments.
This drill covers a working diameter range of 18.51 mm (0.7287 inches) to 19.50 mm (0.7677 inches), making it suited for applications requiring close-tolerance bored holes in that range. The 9.882-inch overall length and 7.63-inch flute length accommodate deep-hole drilling setups on machining centers and CNC lathes. The through-coolant design makes it particularly effective in steel, cast iron, and similar ferrous materials where heat and chip management are critical. Typical use cases include production drilling of structural components, flanges, and housings where hole depth and positional accuracy are required.
Designed for use with SMDT-style replaceable inserts and SMDH-series toolholders within the SMD platform. Requires a toolholder or spindle with a 1-inch whistle notch interface. Coolant-through capability requires a machine spindle with through-spindle coolant supply.
Installation and setup should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the control is in an e-stop or tool-change state before mounting or removing the drill body. Confirm the SMDT insert is seated and clamped to the manufacturer torque specification before operation. Verify through-coolant connections are active and delivering adequate flow before initiating the drilling cycle.
