The SUMITOMO 5KHZW0K is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-performance hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. Built to the SMD Series standard, this drill features a 3/4-inch diameter cutting tip with a 140-degree included point angle, making it suitable for general-purpose and demanding drilling operations. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide in the MEL insert geometry and coated with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi finish that extends tool life under elevated cutting temperatures. Through-coolant capability delivers cutting fluid directly to the tip, supporting chip evacuation and thermal control during deep-hole and high-feed applications. This tool is installed and operated by machining professionals in production and job-shop environments.
The 5KHZW0K is rated for universal application across multiple workpiece material groups, including cast iron and hardened materials (K), stainless and heat-resistant alloys (M), steel and steel alloys (P), and superalloys and titanium (S). This broad material compatibility makes it a practical choice for shops that run varied workpiece materials on CNC machining centers and drill presses without requiring dedicated tooling for each material class. The replaceable-tip design reduces downtime compared to solid-body drills by allowing tip exchange without removing the drill body from the spindle.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip for use with compatible SUMITOMO SMD Series drill bodies accepting the MEL insert geometry at 3/4-inch diameter.
Installation of replaceable carbide drill tips should be performed by a qualified machinist following the tool manufacturer's torque and seating procedure for the SMD Series body. Power down and lock out the spindle before tip exchange. Inspect the drill body seat for chips or damage before seating the new tip, as debris at the seating surface will affect runout and tip life. Through-coolant connections should be verified for proper flow before returning the tool to cut.
