The SUMITOMO 5KHZW0H is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance metal removal in machining applications. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide and carries an ACX80 grade designation, making it suited for demanding cutting operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. A dual-layer TiAlCr and TiSi coating applied via PVD process reduces heat buildup and extends cutting life. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included angle support stable entry and efficient chip evacuation. Through-coolant capability delivers cutting fluid directly to the cutting zone, improving tool life and surface finish in deep-hole drilling operations. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job shop environments are the primary installers of this tooling.
The 5KHZW0H is engineered for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering ISO material classifications K, M, P, and S. This spans cast iron, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. The replaceable tip design allows the tip to be swapped out without removing the drill body from the spindle, reducing downtime during production runs. It is well suited for horizontal and vertical machining centers running through-coolant programs in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking environments.
Designed as a replaceable tip insert for use with compatible SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies. Verify body size and tip seat geometry before ordering to confirm fitment with your specific drill body.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a safe, locked-out state. Use the appropriate torque wrench and seating tool as specified by the drill body manufacturer — do not over-torque the tip retention mechanism. Ensure through-coolant passages in the body are clear before seating the new tip. Inspect the tip seat on the drill body for wear or damage before each tip replacement.
