The SUMITOMO 5KHZW0C is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-productivity hole-making operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. The drill features an ACX80 grade solid carbide tip with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied through a physical vapor deposition process, delivering hardness and thermal resistance suited to demanding cutting conditions. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included angle promote stable entry and efficient chip formation. A cutting diameter of 0.6406 inches (16.27 mm) makes this drill well suited for precision bore applications where dimensional accuracy is critical. Through-coolant capability directs cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, helping manage heat and chip evacuation during deep-hole drilling.
This replaceable tip drill is intended for use in CNC machining centers and turning centers in both production and job-shop environments. The universal primary workpiece material classification covers ISO material groups K, M, P, and S, meaning it is applicable across cast iron, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. Machinists and CNC operators working on structural components, aerospace parts, or general metalworking applications will find this drill compatible with standard coolant-through spindle toolholders that accept SMD series tip inserts.
Designed for use with SMD series replaceable tip drill bodies that accept the MEL tip geometry at 0.6406 inches (16.27 mm) cutting diameter. Compatible with coolant-through spindle toolholders. Applicable to ISO material groups K, M, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the toolholder bore and tip seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the replaceable tip. Follow the drill body manufacturer torque specifications for the tip clamping screw. Verify coolant-through passages are clear and that the machine spindle delivers adequate coolant pressure before initiating a cut.
