The SUMITOMO 5KHZW05 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-performance metal cutting applications. Built to the SMD series platform, this drill accepts the MEL geometry insert tip and features a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating for extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 140-degree included point angle promotes stable entry and reduces thrust force on entry. At 17/32 inches in diameter, the 5KHZW05 delivers consistent hole quality in universal material groups including ferrous, stainless, cast iron, and superalloy applications. Through-coolant capability directs fluid to the cutting edge for improved chip evacuation and thermal management.
This replaceable tip drill is suited for machining centers and CNC turning centers where production drilling demands reliable, repeatable performance. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost compared to solid carbide drills by allowing tip replacement without discarding the drill body. The ACX80 grade and PVD coating make this drill a practical choice for shops running mixed-material jobs in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking environments. Installation and tip changes are handled by qualified machinists following standard toolroom practices.
Designed for use with SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies that accept the MEL tip geometry. Compatible across primary workpiece material codes K, M, P, and S covering cast iron, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, and high-temperature superalloys.
Tip installation and removal should be performed by a qualified machinist using the correct SMD series tip wrench per the manufacturer tool manual. Ensure the drill body shank bore and tip seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the replacement tip. Confirm through-coolant lines are clear and delivering adequate flow before beginning a drilling cycle. Follow machine tool builder specifications for spindle speed and feed rate for the specific workpiece material being drilled.
