The SUMITOMO 5KHZ284 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD Series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built around the SMDT3000MEL insert geometry with ACX80 grade solid carbide, this drill features a 30mm cutting diameter and a 140-degree included angle. A PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual coating provides thermal resistance and extended edge life. Through-coolant capability allows cutting fluid to reach the tip directly, supporting chip evacuation and heat control at depth. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments are the primary users.
This drill is suited for machining centers running universal workpiece materials across multiple material categories including cast iron, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, and high-temperature alloys, reflected by the multi-code classification K, M, P, and S. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing tip exchange without discarding the body, making it a practical choice for high-volume drilling operations where consistent hole quality and cycle time are priorities. The SMD Series platform is a common fit in automated and semi-automated CNC drilling applications.
Designed for use in SUMITOMO SMD Series replaceable tip drill bodies accepting the MEL insert geometry in 30mm diameter. Verify body series and tip seat compatibility before ordering.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and machine in a safe, locked-out state. Follow the tool body manufacturer torque guidelines for tip clamping — do not over-tighten by hand estimation. Confirm coolant ports are clear and through-coolant pressure is within the machine and tool body specifications before running. Inspect the tip seat for damage or debris before each tip installation to prevent seating errors that could affect hole position and finish.
