The SUMITOMO 5KHZ253 is a replaceable drill tip in the SMD series, designed for indexable drill systems used in metal cutting and machining operations. This tip measures 0.9449 inches (24.00 mm) in cutting diameter and is manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included angle support stable chip formation across a range of workpiece materials. Coolant-through capability allows cutting fluid to reach the cutting zone directly, helping to control heat and extend tool life in demanding applications. Installation and replacement are handled by machining professionals and CNC tooling technicians.
This drill tip is suited for use in drilling operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and heat-resistant superalloys, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, and S respectively. The SMD series replaceable tip system is used in production machining environments where consistent hole quality and repeatable tool changes are priorities. It is well matched to CNC machining centers and turning centers equipped with through-spindle or through-tool coolant delivery. The ACX80 grade is selected for applications requiring thermal resistance and edge stability at elevated cutting speeds.
Designed for use in SUMITOMO SMD series indexable drill bodies that accept replaceable drill tips in the 24.00 mm (0.9449 inch) diameter size range with MEL geometry.
Replaceable drill tip replacement is performed by qualified machining technicians. Before changing the tip, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped, the machine is in an e-stop or locked-out state per facility LOTO procedures, and the tool holder is secured. Use the appropriate torque wrench and tip-seating tool specified by the drill body manufacturer to seat the tip correctly. Do not force-fit or hand-tighten without proper tooling, as improper seating can cause tip breakage or poor hole accuracy.
