The SUMITOMO 5KHZ238 is a replaceable drill tip engineered for use with modular indexable drill systems. Part of the SMD series, this tip features a 0.8268-inch (21.00 mm) cutting diameter and is manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included angle are designed to deliver consistent entry and exit performance across a wide range of workpiece materials. Coolant-through design channels cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, helping manage heat and chip evacuation at depth. This tip is typically installed by machinists and CNC operators in production or job-shop environments.
The 5KHZ238 carries a universal primary workpiece material classification, covering cast iron (K), stainless and heat-resistant alloys (M), steel (P), and superalloys (S). This broad compatibility makes it a practical stock item for shops running varied materials without dedicated tooling for each. It is well suited to through-coolant spindle setups where consistent chip removal is critical for hole quality and tool life in moderate to high-volume drilling operations.
Designed for use with Sumitomo SMD series modular drill bodies that accept MEL-geometry replaceable tips at 21.00 mm cutting diameter. Verify body series and tip seat specifications before ordering.
Replaceable drill tips of this type are seated and torqued into the drill body using the manufacturer-specified wrench — consult the SMD body documentation for proper seating procedure. Power down the machine and confirm zero-energy state before tip removal or installation. Inspect the tip seat in the drill body for wear, chips, or contamination before seating a new tip, as a damaged seat will affect runout and hole quality. Through-coolant connections should be verified for alignment and flow before returning the assembly to service.
