The SUMITOMO 5KHZ237 is a replaceable drill tip in the SMD series, designed for use with modular indexable drill bodies in precision machining applications. This tip features a 0.8071-inch (20.50 mm) cutting diameter and is manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual coating, designated Grade ACX80. The MEL insert geometry and 140-degree included angle suit a wide range of drilling operations. Coolant-through capability allows cutting fluid to be delivered directly to the cutting edge, supporting chip evacuation and extended tool life in demanding cuts. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install and replace this tip at the machine.
The 5KHZ237 is rated for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering ISO material groups K (cast iron), M (stainless steel), P (steel), and S (superalloys and titanium). This broad classification makes it a versatile tip for job shops and production environments running mixed-material programs. The replaceable tip format reduces tooling cost compared to solid indexable drills by allowing tip replacement without changing the drill body. It is suited for vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and CNC lathes equipped with compatible SMD-series bodies.
Designed for use with SUMITOMO SMD-series modular drill bodies that accept replaceable tips at the 20.50 mm diameter specification. Confirm body compatibility with the specific SMD body part number before ordering.
Replaceable drill tip installation is performed by trained machinists or tooling technicians. Disengage spindle power and confirm the machine is in a locked-out, zero-energy state before removing or seating the tip. Use only the manufacturer-recommended torque tool or wrench for the tip retention mechanism — do not over-tighten by feel. Inspect the mating seating surfaces on the drill body for chips or contamination before installing the new tip to ensure proper seating and runout.
