The SUMITOMO 5KHZ235 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD Series, designed for high-performance hole-making across a wide range of workpiece materials. It features a 19.5mm cutting diameter, a 140-degree included point angle, and a MEL insert geometry. The drill body supports through-coolant delivery, which helps evacuate chips and manage heat at the cutting zone. The ACX80 grade tip carries a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual coating that extends tool life in demanding cutting conditions. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians install this drill in machining centers and CNC turning applications.
The 5KHZ235 is rated for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and superalloy classifications (ISO material codes K, M, P, and S). Its replaceable tip design allows the carbide insert to be swapped at the machine without discarding the drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole in production environments. Typical applications include general-purpose drilling in job shop, automotive, aerospace, and energy-sector machining operations where consistent hole quality and process repeatability are required.
Designed as a replaceable tip drill insert compatible with SUMITOMO SMD Series drill bodies. Confirmed for use with workpiece materials classified under ISO codes K, M, P, and S, including cast iron, steel, stainless steel, and superalloys.
Installation of replaceable tip drills should be performed by qualified machining personnel following the tool manufacturer's torque and seating procedures for the SMD Series body. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before tip replacement. Inspect the drill body seating surface and coolant ports for chips or debris before installing a new tip. Verify through-coolant pressure settings on the machine are within the operating range recommended for the drill diameter in use.
