The SUMITOMO 5KHZ232 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD Series, designed for high-performance hole-making in a wide range of workpiece materials. Engineered with a solid carbide tip and a 140-degree included point angle, this drill delivers precise entry geometry and reduced thrust force during cutting operations. The TiAlCr and TiSi coating is applied via a PVD process, providing thermal resistance and extended tool life across demanding applications. With an 18mm drilling diameter and through-coolant capability, it suits production environments where heat management and chip evacuation are critical. Machinists and tooling specialists install this drill in compatible SMD-Series drill bodies.
The 5KHZ232 is suited for universal workpiece material categories, including cast iron (K), stainless steel (M), steel (P), and superalloys (S). It fits production machining environments in both job shop and high-volume manufacturing settings. The replaceable tip design allows the worn tip to be swapped without discarding the full drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole. The MEL insert geometry optimizes cutting edge engagement for stable, repeatable performance across these material groups.
Designed as a replaceable tip insert for SMD Series drill bodies accepting the MEL insert geometry at 18mm diameter. Specific compatible holder part numbers should be confirmed against the SUMITOMO SMD Series selection guide.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and locked out. Use the correct torque wrench and seat the carbide tip fully into the drill body pocket before engaging the clamping mechanism. Inspect the seating surface and coolant ports on the drill body for contamination or damage before each tip change. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and cutting tool manufacturer guidelines for spindle speed, feed rate, and coolant flow settings appropriate to the workpiece material.
