The SUMITOMO 5KHY220 is a carbide replaceable tip drill engineered for high-performance metal removal in steel and steel-alloy workpieces. Built to the SMD series platform, it accepts an MTL insert geometry tip made from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi multi-layer finish. The drill operates at a 29mm diameter with a 140-degree included point angle, which promotes smooth chip formation and accurate hole entry. Through-coolant delivery channels pressurized fluid directly to the cutting edge, extending tool life and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole applications. Machinists and tool-room professionals working in production environments will find this drill a direct fit for demanding steel cutting operations.
This drill is suited to CNC machining centers and turning centers processing steel components at moderate-to-high cutting speeds. The ACX70 grade carbide substrate is selected for steel-focused cutting, corresponding to ISO P workpiece material classification. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing tip exchange without discarding the entire drill body. It is commonly used in automotive, die-mold, and general machining environments where consistent hole quality and cycle-time efficiency are priorities.
Designed as a replaceable tip drill within the SMD series platform, compatible with SMD series drill bodies accepting the MTL insert geometry in 29mm diameter configuration.
Installation and tip exchange should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer torque and seating procedures for the SMD body. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing or inspecting the replaceable tip. Verify through-coolant pressure and flow rate are within the machine and tool specifications before running the first cycle. Inspect the tip seating pocket for debris or damage prior to each tip installation to maintain runout accuracy.
