The SUMITOMO 2900W2X is an indexable square-shoulder end mill from the WaveMill series, designed for precision milling operations across a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. The toolholder features a 1-inch cutting diameter with a 1-inch Weldon flat shank and an overall length (OAL) of 3.811 inches. It accommodates two AXMT17 or AXET17 inserts secured by screw clamping, and a 90-degree lead angle ensures true square shoulders on each pass. Through-coolant capability supports chip evacuation and heat management during aggressive cuts. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops, aerospace, and general manufacturing rely on this platform for consistent, repeatable shoulder milling performance.
The 2900W2X is suited for both roughing and finishing square-shoulder features on alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum alloy, non-ferrous metals, and other common workpiece materials. Its ISO number WEX31000EW places it within the WEX cutter family, a platform built for high-feed and high-stability milling applications on vertical machining centers and horizontal CNC mills. The 2-insert configuration keeps cutting forces manageable on lighter-duty spindles while maintaining productivity. It is appropriate for both production environments and lower-volume precision work where shoulder geometry and surface finish are critical.
Designed for use with AXMT17 and AXET17 insert styles. ISO designation WEX31000EW. Compatible workpiece material codes include P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), N (non-ferrous and aluminum alloy), and S (alloy).
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool change interlock is engaged before mounting or removing the toolholder. Seat the Weldon flat shank fully into the tool holder bore and tighten the set screw against the flat per the machine tool manufacturer torque guidelines. Verify insert seating and screw torque before initiating a cutting cycle, and confirm through-coolant passages are clear and pressurized to the machine specification.
