The SUMITOMO 1N4A005 is a CCGT-style cermet turning insert designed for precision finish turning of steel workpieces. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a 3/8-inch (0.3750-inch decimal) inscribed circle and a minimal corner radius of 0.0039 inches, making it well suited for light finishing cuts where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical. The insert is coated via a PVD process in SUMITOMO T1500Z grade cermet, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. A screw-holding method and positive rake geometry contribute to consistent seating and chip control. This insert is installed by CNC machinists and tool and die professionals working on steel turning operations.
This insert is intended for finish turning applications on steel materials, classified under ISO workpiece material code P. The MESI chip breaker geometry is engineered to manage chip flow during light to medium depth-of-cut passes, reducing the risk of chip buildup on the workpiece or cutting tool. It is appropriate for use in CNC lathes and turning centers where tight tolerances and fine surface finishes are required. The ISO code equivalent is CCGT09T301MN-SI. The ANSI and ISO 13399 standards apply to this insert geometry.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for CCGT-style turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 5/32-inch thickness insert with a screw-holding method and clearance code C, tolerance code G.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamping screw to the correct seating torque per the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
