The SUMITOMO 19PW170 is a DNMG-style indexable turning insert in grade AC630M, designed for single-point turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. The insert features a solid carbide substrate with an Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) CVD coating, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The 55-degree diamond shape (ANSI code DNMG432EEX, ISO code DNMG150408N-EX) delivers a sharp, stable cutting edge geometry with a neutral hand orientation. The EEX chip breaker and positive rake angle of 16 degrees promote controlled chip flow, making this insert well suited for medium to finishing passes.
This insert is intended for use in metalworking environments where consistent dimensional accuracy and surface finish are required. The AC630M grade is targeted at stainless steel (secondary workpiece material code M) applications, though the CVD Al2O3 coating also supports use in general-purpose steel turning. Typical install scenarios include production turning on CNC lathes, turning centers, and manual engine lathes equipped with appropriate DNMG-compatible toolholders. A licensed machinist or CNC operator installs this insert as a direct replacement in the DN series toolholder system.
Designed for use in DNMG-style indexable turning toolholders that accept a 55-degree diamond insert with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, clamp and pin holding method, and clearance code N. Compatible with the Sumitomo DN series toolholder system.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp; do not overtighten. Inspect the insert edge and chip breaker for damage before resuming cuts.
