The SUMITOMO 19PW166 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the AC630M manufacturer grade with an aluminum oxide (Al2O3) coating applied via CVD process, delivering strong wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The insert is neutral-hand, making it compatible with standard CNMG toolholders without left- or right-hand restriction. At 0.579 inches in length with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle diameter and a 3/64-inch corner radius, this insert suits medium to finish turning operations where consistent dimensional control is required. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers.
The 19PW166 carries the EEX chip breaker geometry, which is optimized for positive rake cutting action. With a rake angle of 16 degrees and a relief angle of 0 degrees (clearance code N), it performs well on applications involving stainless steel and similar secondary workpiece materials. The 80-degree diamond insert shape (shape code C) provides two usable cutting edges per insert and concentrates cutting force for stable, repeatable passes. This insert is suited to both roughing and finishing passes on stainless steel and comparable ISO M-group materials in production turning environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for CNMG-style indexable turning insert seats. ISO code CNMG120412N-EX. Compatible with CNMG 433 toolholders that accept clamp-and-pin style insert retention. Verify toolholder bore diameter against the 0.2031-inch hole diameter before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to release the clamp and pin retaining system — do not overtighten the clamp screw, as this can fracture the carbide insert body. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque and seating specifications for the specific toolholder in use.
