The SUMITOMO 19HWAPS is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMG series, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC and manual lathes. Carrying the AC520U grade designation, this insert features a dual PVD coating of TiAlN and AlCrN under SUMITOMO's Super ZX proprietary coating process, delivering high heat resistance and edge stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. The 35-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code V) and neutral hand orientation make it well-suited for both axial and longitudinal turning passes. It measures 0.6535 inches in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius. A 13-degree positive rake angle reduces cutting forces, and the ESU chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation across a range of depths of cut.
The 19HWAPS is intended for turning applications involving difficult-to-machine materials, specifically stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material codes M and S). The ESU chip breaker is optimized for these materials, which produce stringy or work-hardening chips. Typical installations include finishing to semi-finishing passes on CNC turning centers in job shops, aerospace component machining, and medical parts manufacturing where tight tolerances and surface finish requirements demand consistent edge performance. The N clearance and M tolerance codes conform to both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards for insert geometry interchangeability.
Designed for VNMG-style toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with clamp or pin holding. ISO designation VNMG160408N-SU. Compatible with toolholder systems conforming to ANSI and ISO 13399 VNMG 332 insert geometry standards.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full lockout-tagout state before insert indexing or replacement. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamp surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Do not exceed the chip breaker geometry's recommended depth-of-cut range for the target workpiece material. Inspect the insert edge condition regularly when machining superalloys and titanium, as these materials can cause accelerated flank wear even with coated carbide grades.
