The SUMITOMO 19HVWBD is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPMT series, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a 60-degree triangular insert shape with a positive rake angle of 8 degrees and an 11-degree relief angle, delivering clean, efficient cutting action on difficult workpiece materials. The insert is coated with TiAlN and AlCrN via a PVD process under SUMITOMO's proprietary Super ZX coating designation, providing thermal and wear resistance suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. Installed by machinists and tool-room technicians, this insert seats via screw-lock (Torx or similar) into compatible TPMT-style toolholders.
The 19HVWBD is engineered for primary use on cast iron, stainless steel, and superalloy workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes K, M, and S. The ESU chip breaker geometry supports finishing and light-to-medium roughing passes where chip control is critical. Typical applications include close-tolerance shaft turning, flange facing, and contour work on aerospace, medical, and industrial components where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities. The insert conforms to ANSI code TPMT21.50.5ESU and ISO code TPMT110202N-SU, making it straightforward to cross-reference for toolholder selection.
Designed for use in TPMT-style screw-lock turning toolholders accepting a 1/4 inch inscribed circle insert with a 3/32 inch insert thickness and a 0.1070 inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket geometry against ANSI code TPMT21.50.5ESU or ISO code TPMT110202N-SU before installation.
Insert replacement and toolholder setup should be performed by qualified machinists with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state per applicable lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Use the correct Torx or hex key to seat the clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque range — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, and confirm the insert is fully bottomed in the pocket before re-engaging the spindle.
