The SUMITOMO 196DAFI is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG432EMU geometry, coated via PVD process with the AC6040M grade. Designed for negative-rake, neutral-hand turning operations, this insert features an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C) and a 0.0313-inch corner radius. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches and insert length is 0.5079 inches. It is held by clamp and pin and is intended for use in CN-series toolholders. Typical installers are CNC machinists and toolroom operators performing precision turning on stainless steel and similar difficult-to-machine alloys.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel (Primary Workpiece Material Code M) in turning applications where edge toughness and surface finish consistency are critical. The EMU chip breaker geometry manages chip flow across a range of feed rates and depths of cut common in production turning. The AC6040M grade with PVD coating provides wear resistance and edge integrity suited to the heat and work-hardening conditions typical of austenitic and ferritic stainless materials. It fits standard CNMG-style toolholders used on CNC lathes and turning centers in both job-shop and production environments.
Designed for use in CN-series, CNMG-style clamp-and-pin toolholders. ANSI designation CNMG432EMU and ISO designation CNMG120408N-MU govern toolholder fit. Confirm toolholder pocket dimensions and insert seat style before installation.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp hardware for the toolholder — do not over-tighten or use substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for debris or damage before seating a new insert, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert fracture.
