The SUMITOMO 194AAPS is a cermet turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on steel workpieces. It features a 35-degree diamond (V) insert shape with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle and a 1/32 inch corner radius. The insert carries a T1500Z cermet grade with a PVD coating applied for enhanced wear resistance and surface finish performance. With a negative rake geometry and VNMG-style form factor, this insert is suited for finish to semi-finish turning passes where dimensional accuracy and tool life consistency are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job shop environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is used in external turning applications on steel components, classified under primary workpiece material code P. The ESU chip breaker geometry is designed to manage chip control during finish turning on steel. The ANSI code for this insert is VNMG332ESU and the ISO equivalent code is VNMG160408N-SU. It is suited for use in toolholders accepting VNMG-style inserts with clamp and pin holding methods. Typical applications include shaft turning, diameter reduction passes, and contour turning on low to medium alloy steels in both CNC lathe and conventional turning setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard fit for VNMG-style toolholders accepting inserts with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, clamp and pin holding method, and N clearance with M tolerance class. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against ANSI code VNMG332ESU or ISO code VNMG160408N-SU before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all power is off before seating or removing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp; do not overtighten the clamp screw. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert to avoid seating errors that could affect part tolerances.
