The SUMITOMO 18RBALK is a solid carbide grooving insert in the GND series, designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to GCMN2002GG geometry with a CVD-applied AC830P coating, this double-ended insert delivers a 2 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 0.75 inches (19.05 mm). The neutral hand orientation suits straight plunge grooving applications. With a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a GG chip breaker, it is engineered for consistent chip control in demanding machining environments. Installation and tool management are handled by machinists and CNC operators working with compatible grooving toolholders.
The 18RBALK targets external grooving and profiling operations in materials classified under ISO P and ISO M workpiece groups, specifically carbon and alloy steels and stainless steels. The GCMN insert style and 2002 size code make it a direct fit for GND-series toolholders requiring a size-2 insert seat. The GG chip breaker geometry is suited to moderate feed rates and finish grooving passes where controlled chip evacuation reduces surface damage risk. This insert is sold individually and typically ordered in multiples of five to maintain toolcrib inventory at active turning cells.
Designed for use with GND-series grooving toolholders accepting a size-2 insert seat and GCMN-style inserts. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO M) and carbon and alloy steels (ISO P).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Secure the insert firmly in the toolholder pocket using the appropriate torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seat and clamping hardware for debris or wear each time an edge is indexed to the next position.
