The SUMITOMO 18HWALK is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. Built to the GND series standard, this insert carries the AC520U manufacturer grade with a Super ZX PVD coating for extended wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. It features a neutral hand orientation, a 2 mm cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 20 mm, making it suitable for medium to deep grooving passes in steel and other ferrous materials. A GG chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation in continuous or interrupted grooving cuts. The insert weighs approximately 0.012 pounds and is held by clamp-style toolholders.
This insert is intended for use in production machining environments where consistent groove geometry and surface finish are required. It is compatible with GND-series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept GCM-style inserts. Typical applications include OD grooving, parting preparation, and undercut profiling on turned components in job shops, production floors, and precision machining operations. The AC520U grade with Super ZX PVD finish is particularly suited for machining carbon steels, alloy steels, and stainless steels at moderate to high cutting speeds. Two cutting edges per insert extend usable tool life before indexing is required.
Designed for use with GND-series clamp-style toolholders accepting GCM insert style in size 2002. Refer to the SUMITOMO GND series toolholder catalog to confirm holder compatibility before installation. Manufacturers catalog number GCMN2002-GG-AC520U may be used to cross-reference equivalent holder pairings.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the clamp and toolholder pocket are clean and free of chips before inserting to maintain proper seating and prevent insert rocking. Do not exceed the recommended maximum depth of cut for this insert geometry, and verify that cutting parameters are appropriate for the workpiece material and machine rigidity.
