The SUMITOMO 18HMAMN is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the GCMR insert style in size code 2002, it features a 2.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 19.05 mm, making it well-suited for medium-depth grooving passes. The insert carries SUMITOMO grade AC530U with a PVD coating process, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Right-hand cutting orientation and a positive rake angle of 5 degrees help reduce cutting forces and improve chip evacuation.
This insert is intended for use in the SUMITOMO GND series toolholding system. It is suited for production and job-shop environments where stainless steel and steel are the primary workpiece materials. Secondary applications include cast iron, hard materials, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The double-end configuration extends usable life per insert, supporting cost-effective tooling programs in high-cycle turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians are the typical end users for this insert type.
Designed for use with SUMITOMO GND series grooving toolholders that accept GCMR-style inserts with insert seat size 3. Primary workpiece material codes are M (stainless steel) and P (steel); secondary codes include H (hard material), K (cast iron), N (non-ferrous), and S (superalloy and titanium).
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified for the GND series toolholder clamping screw - do not overtighten, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excessive clamping force. Verify insert seating and orientation before resuming machining operations. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping cutting edges prior to use.
