The SUMITOMO 186PALL is a solid carbide CVD-coated grooving insert in the GND series, designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the AC425K grade designation and uses the GCMN3002GG insert style, delivering a 3.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 19.05 mm. The double-ended neutral geometry provides a 5-degree positive rake angle and a 0.20 mm corner radius, supporting clean, repeatable groove profiles. This insert is sized at ANSI code GCMN3002-GG and conforms to ISO 13399 standards, making it a straightforward specification match for tool presetting and digital tool management systems.
The AC425K grade with CVD coating is optimized primarily for cast iron workpieces, where the coating's wear resistance and thermal stability extend tool life under continuous and interrupted cuts. Typical applications include groove turning on brake rotors, pump housings, hydraulic manifolds, and similar ferrous castings in production and job-shop environments. The GG chip breaker geometry helps manage chip flow at the groove face, which is critical when working in confined bore diameters or when chip evacuation is restricted by part geometry. CNC machinists and tool-room operators running medium to high production volumes on cast iron components are the primary users of this insert.
Designed for use in SUMITOMO GND series grooving toolholders that accept GCMN3002-style inserts with a size 3 insert seat. Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against SUMITOMO GND series toolholder documentation before ordering.
Installation is performed by a CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Before seating the insert, power down the machine and lock out the spindle per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the insert pocket and clamping screw are free of chips and debris before seating the insert, as contamination can affect seating accuracy and cutting-edge life. Inspect the insert seat for wear or damage at each insert change. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque for the insert screw size used.
