The SUMITOMO 16RK144 is an uncoated Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision metal cutting applications in CNC and manual turning operations. Carrying the ANSI code 2NUCCGA32.51 and ISO code 2NU-CCGW09T304, this insert features a diamond-shaped (C) body with an 80-degree included angle, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The BN7500 grade delivers high hardness and thermal stability, making it a reliable choice for machinists working with difficult-to-cut materials at elevated cutting speeds.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of cast iron, hardened steel, and superalloys in production machining environments. The positive rake geometry and neutral hand orientation allow flexible application across a variety of toolholders. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.015 inches and a screw-mounted holding method, it is well matched to light, precise cuts where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are the priority. Typical users include CNC machinists and toolroom operators in job shops and production facilities.
Designed for use in CCGA-style screw-clamp toolholders compatible with the 2NU-CCGA insert style and CCG series geometry. Verify toolholder pocket dimensions against the insert thickness of 0.1563 inches and inscribed circle of 0.375 inches before installation. No specific machine or toolholder model numbers were provided in the product data.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and all axis motion disabled before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure without over-torquing the insert pocket. Inspect the pocket seat and clamp for wear or debris before seating the insert, as contamination can cause insert rocking and premature edge failure. Follow your facility's tooling change procedures and applicable shop safety standards when handling PCBN inserts, as edges are extremely sharp.
