The SUMITOMO 16JYDQB is a PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) turning insert designed for high-speed, hard-part machining applications. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, this insert carries the BN7000 grade designation and features a negative rake, negative side clearance geometry in the CNGA style. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a strong cutting edge, while the 0.5-inch inscribed circle and 0.03125-inch corner radius make it suitable for precision turning operations. It ships bright and uncoated, and is held in a toolholder via clamp or pin methods. Machinists and tooling specialists working in production turning environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is engineered for turning cast iron (ISO material group K) where high to moderate wear resistance is required, and for special and super alloys (ISO material group S) where high wear resistance is the priority. It is well suited for finish and semi-finish turning passes on hardened ferrous components and difficult-to-machine superalloys. The CNGA insert style with negative geometry is typically used in rigid setups where cutting forces can be managed and surface finish demands are high.

Installation of turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and all axes locked or in a safe state. Seat and clamping surfaces should be clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the toolholder manufacturer's recommended torque for clamp screws to avoid fracturing the PCBN blank. Negative-rake CNGA inserts require a rigid setup and adequate machine spindle power; verify setup stiffness before taking initial cuts on hardened or difficult-to-machine materials.
