The SUMITOMO 16JRCWP is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of hard materials. It carries the ANSI designation NUVNMA330.5 and ISO code NU-VNMA160402. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V), a negative rake geometry, and an uncoated BN2000 grade substrate. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 0.1875-inch thickness, and a 0.0078-inch corner radius, this insert is engineered for precision finishing and semi-finishing passes on hardened steels and other difficult-to-cut materials. Installation and use are performed by CNC machinists and toolroom professionals in production turning environments.
The 16JRCWP is suited for turning operations on hard workpiece materials (ISO application code H), including hardened steels typically in the 45 to 68 HRC range. The NU-VNMA insert style with a clamp and pin holding method seats into standard VNMA-compatible toolholders. A maximum depth of cut of 0.015 inches and a 0.1299-inch insert length make this insert appropriate for light to moderate stock removal on hardened components. It conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, ensuring dimensional consistency across compatible tooling systems.
Designed for use in standard VNMA-compatible toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 35-degree diamond insert with a 0.15-inch hole diameter. Verified compatible toolholder series must be confirmed against the ANSI NUVNMA330.5 specification.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists following standard CNC turning setup procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified for the toolholder to secure the clamp and pin holding method — do not overtighten by hand. Inspect the insert seat and shim for wear or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout control.
