The SUMITOMO 16JRCUE is an uncoated Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision machining of hardened steel. Conforming to ANSI code 3NUTNGA333 and ISO code 3NU-TNGA160412, this triangular insert features a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, a 3/64 inch corner radius, and a 60-degree included angle. The BN2000 grade PCBN substrate delivers the hardness and thermal stability required for interrupted and continuous cuts in demanding ferrous materials. It carries three usable cutting edges per insert, maximizing cost-per-edge efficiency for high-production turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in tool rooms and production environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for turning hardened steel workpieces in both roughing and finishing applications where conventional carbide tooling loses edge integrity. The 3NUTNGA333 style seats in standard TNGA-compatible toolholders using a clamp and pin holding method, making it appropriate for rigid, positive-clamping setups on CNC lathes. The uncoated PCBN substrate performs reliably at elevated cutting speeds on hardened ferrous parts without the adhesion or thermal barrier limitations of coated alternatives. It is used in automotive, die and mold, and general precision machining environments where workpiece hardness exceeds typical carbide range.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for standard TNGA-format toolholders accepting a triangular insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, 3/16 inch insert thickness, and 0.150 inch hole diameter using a clamp and pin clamping method.
Installation of PCBN turning inserts is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing an insert. Use the manufacturer-specified clamping hardware and torque the clamp screw according to the toolholder manufacturer guidelines — do not over-torque, as PCBN substrates are brittle and susceptible to fracture under excess clamping stress. Confirm proper insert seating and pocket cleanliness before resuming cutting operations.
