The SUMITOMO 16JRCUB is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed, hard-part machining applications. Manufactured to ANSI code 2NUVNGA332 and ISO code 2NU-VNGA160408, this uncoated insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V-style) with a neutral hand orientation and a negative rake geometry. The inscribed circle measures 0.375 inches, the corner radius is 0.03125 inches, and the insert thickness is 0.1875 inches. With two cutting edges per insert, the 16JRCUB is suited for CNC turning operations where tool life and dimensional accuracy on hardened or abrasive workpieces are critical. It is held via clamp and pin mounting.
This insert is intended for turning cast iron, steel, and superalloy workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes H, K, and S. It performs well in finishing and semi-finishing passes where conventional carbide tooling experiences rapid wear. The BN2000 manufacturer grade, combined with the uncoated PCBN substrate, delivers thermal stability and edge retention at elevated cutting speeds typical of hard-turning operations. The VNGA series geometry is a common fit on CNC lathes and turning centers configured for precision hard-part work in aerospace, automotive, and general metalworking environments.
Designed as an OEM-style VNGA-series PCBN turning insert for use in toolholders accepting a 2NUVNGA332 style insert with clamp and pin retention. Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against the 2NU-VNGA insert pocket specification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and in a locked-out state before any insert change. Seat the insert fully into the pocket and torque the clamp or pin fastener per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before securing. Handle PCBN inserts with care, as the cutting edge is brittle and susceptible to chipping from impact or improper seating.
