The SUMITOMO 16HQEHA is a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) turning insert in the VCMT221 geometry, engineered for machining non-ferrous and aluminum workpiece materials. It carries the DA1000 manufacturer grade, which is optimized for moderate wear resistance and toughness in N-class (non-ferrous) applications. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a positive rake angle, and a 7-degree relief angle with positive side clearance. The GD chip breaker geometry supports efficient chip control in continuous and light-interrupted cuts on aluminum alloys, copper, and other soft non-ferrous metals. It ships uncoated and ready for use with standard VCMT-style toolholders.
This insert is intended for turning operations on non-ferrous metals in both production and job-shop environments. The VCMT221 form factor fits a wide range of neutral-hand external turning and profiling toolholders. PCD cutting edges are well suited to high-speed finishing and semi-finishing passes on aluminum, copper, and similar materials where long edge life and surface finish quality are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in aerospace, automotive, and general precision machining typically specify this insert for high-volume aluminum component work. The insert complies with both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards, making it cross-referenceable by ISO code NF-VCMT110304N-GD.
Designed for use in VCMT-style neutral-hand turning toolholders accepting a 221 (ANSI) or 110304 (ISO) insert size. Pin and screw insert holding methods are both supported per the insert geometry specification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the program in hold or estop condition. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket and pocket stop before torquing the clamping screw or engaging the pin lock to the manufacturer specification for the toolholder. PCD edges are brittle and should not contact hardened steel, interrupted cuts on ferrous material, or abrasive workpiece surfaces, as edge chipping or catastrophic failure can result. Inspect the seating pocket for chips or debris before each insert index.
