The SUMITOMO 16HQEFD is a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for precision machining of non-ferrous metals and aluminum alloys. It conforms to ANSI insert code DCMT32.50.5 and ISO insert code DCMT11T302, placing it in Sumitomo Series D. The insert features a 55-degree diamond rhombic shape, a 0.0078-inch corner radius, a 3/8-inch (0.3750-inch) inscribed circle, and a bright uncoated finish. With a positive rake angle and positive side clearance, it is engineered for moderate wear resistance and toughness in light to moderate non-ferrous cutting applications. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators install this insert in compatible toolholders accepting DCMT-style inserts.
This insert is suited for turning operations on aluminum, copper, brass, and other non-ferrous materials in production and job-shop environments. The PCD substrate provides the hardness and edge retention required for high-surface-finish cuts on gummy or abrasive non-ferrous workpieces. It carries manufacturer grade DA1000 and uses a T-style chip breaker, making it appropriate for moderate-depth finishing and semi-finishing passes. It is held in the toolholder via pin and screw clamping, compatible with standard DCMT-style toolholding systems.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for DCMT-style turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 5/32-inch thick, pin-and-screw clamped inserts per ANSI and ISO 13399 standards.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC lathe operators. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and verify pin and screw clamping torque is within the toolholder manufacturer specifications before resuming cutting. Do not use this PCD insert on ferrous metals, as iron content will rapidly degrade the diamond substrate.
