The SUMITOMO 16FSW34 is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed precision machining of difficult-to-cut materials. This uncoated, bright-finish insert features a triangular shape with a 60-degree included angle, a 1/4-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. It carries manufacturer grade BN700 and belongs to Series T. The insert is screw-held with positive rake geometry and a 7-degree relief angle, making it well suited for demanding finish and semi-finish turning applications where edge integrity and thermal resistance are critical. Machinists and tooling technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is intended for turning cast iron and superalloy workpieces where conventional carbide tooling reaches its performance limits. It is used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes where high cutting speeds generate significant heat at the tool-workpiece interface. The 3NU-TCGA insert style and TCGW110208 ISO code make it compatible with standard TCGA-style toolholders. The maximum depth of cut is 0.015 inches, making this insert best suited for light finishing passes rather than heavy stock removal. It is a single-piece, minimum-order-quantity unit appropriate for job shop and production environments alike.
Designed for use in TCGA-style screw-clamp toolholders accepting a triangular insert with a 0.110-inch hole diameter. ISO code 3NU-TCGW110208 and insert size code 21.52 identify the correct toolholder family. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron (ISO material code K) and superalloys (ISO material code S).
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians using the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Always index or replace the insert with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, energy-isolated state per OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or damage before seating a new insert edge. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification, as PCBN inserts are brittle and susceptible to edge chipping under interrupted cuts or excessive loads without confirmed application data.
