The SUMITOMO 16DTCEB is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision machining of hardened ferrous materials and hard steels. It carries the BNC200 manufacturer grade and features a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) TiN coating applied over the PCBN substrate. The insert is diamond-shaped with an 80-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.03125-inch corner radius, and a 0.1875-inch insert thickness. With four usable cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, it is engineered for stable, high-precision turning operations under interrupted and continuous cut conditions. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments install this insert into compatible toolholders for hard-turning applications.
The 16DTCEB is suited for hard turning of hardened steels and secondary workpiece materials classified under the H material group. It fits into CNGA-style toolholders secured by clamp and pin holding methods. Typical applications include finish and semi-finish turning of bearing surfaces, hardened shafts, and similar components where tight dimensional tolerances and consistent surface finish are required. The ANSI code is 4NCCNGA432 and the ISO code is 4NC-CNGA120408, making it straightforward to cross-reference against existing toolholder specifications.
Designed for use in CNGA-style toolholders accepting a 4NC insert configuration. ANSI code 4NCCNGA432 and ISO code 4NC-CNGA120408 can be used to confirm toolholder fitment. The clamp and pin holding method requires a compatible toolholder seat designed for that retention style.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and seating procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's specifications for clamp and pin hardware torque requirements.
