The SUMITOMO 16DTBKB is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert engineered for hard and difficult-to-machine materials. It carries the BNC200 manufacturer grade and a PVD-applied TiN finish that supports cutting edge durability at elevated temperatures. The insert follows the ANSI code 2NCCNGA432 and ISO code 2NC-CNGA120408, with an 80-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a negative rake geometry. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius, it is sized for precision turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the typical installers of this insert class.
This insert is intended for turning operations on cast iron, hardened steel, and superalloys. The 2NC-CNGA insert style with a clamp-and-pin holding method makes it suitable for rigid toolholding setups common in production turning environments, including both conventional and CNC lathes. Its PCBN substrate performs best in interrupted and continuous cuts on hardened workpieces where carbide grades reach their wear limits. It is sold individually and ordered in single-unit multiples.
Designed to fit toolholders accepting the 2NC-CNGA432 insert style with clamp-and-pin mounting. Conforms to ANSI and ISO 13399 insert geometry standards, making it interchangeable with holders specifying CNGA-style inserts of the same size class.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before seating or replacing inserts. Seat the insert firmly against the pocket locating surfaces and verify the clamp and pin are fully engaged before resuming operation. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specified for this insert geometry, as PCBN substrates are sensitive to impact loads beyond their designed parameters.
