The SUMITOMO 16DTBGZ is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert finished with a PVD-applied TiN coating and manufactured in the BNC200 grade. It carries an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C), a 1/2 inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32 inch corner radius. With four cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, this insert is engineered for hard-turning operations on steel and similar difficult-to-machine materials. It conforms to ANSI code 4NCCNGA432HS and ISO code 4NC-CNGA120408HS, making cross-referencing against existing tooling programs straightforward for machinists and tooling engineers.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning applications on hardened steel workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. The clamp-and-pin holding method and N clearance angle make it compatible with standard toolholders designed for CNGA-style inserts. Typical applications include bearing surfaces, shafts, and hardened components where cubic boron nitride outperforms conventional carbide. The maximum depth of cut of 0.015 inches and insert thickness of 0.1875 inches position it as a precision finishing tool rather than a heavy stock-removal insert.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for ANSI 4NCCNGA432HS and ISO 4NC-CNGA120408HS style toolholders accepting CNGA insert geometry with clamp-and-pin holding. Secondary workpiece material classification is Steel (H). Verify toolholder seat and clamping style before installation.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and clamping procedures. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or indexing the insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for debris or wear before clamping. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut for this insert geometry, as PCBN edges are brittle and sensitive to interrupted cuts and excessive feed rates.
