The SUMITOMO 16CDW5X is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for precision machining of non-ferrous metals. Manufactured under the DA2200 grade with a coated finish, this insert features a 55-degree diamond shape with a neutral rake angle and zero-degree relief angle. The 0.5-inch inscribed circle and 0.03125-inch corner radius make it well-suited for finishing and semi-finishing operations where tight tolerances and surface quality are priorities. It is held in place by a clamp and pin method and conforms to both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards. Machinists and tooling technicians working in production or job-shop environments install this insert type in compatible turning toolholders.
This insert is intended for turning operations on non-ferrous workpiece materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, and similar alloys. The NF-DNMA insert style, combined with the PCD substrate and DA2200 grade, delivers consistent performance in high-speed finishing cuts where carbide inserts may wear prematurely. The chip breaker style A geometry helps manage chip flow in these materials. It is appropriate for use in CNC lathes and turning centers across both high-volume production and precision contract machining environments.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard tooling insert for turning toolholders accepting NF-DNMA style inserts with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and clamp-and-pin holding. Verify toolholder insert pocket geometry before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and in a locked-out state. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert seating tools specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the clamp. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating the insert. Never exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended cutting parameters for the insert style and workpiece material.
