The SUMITOMO 16CDW5T is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of non-ferrous metals and aluminum alloys. Manufactured to the DA2200 grade, this insert delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it well suited for finishing and semi-finishing operations where surface quality and tool life are priorities. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. It carries a bright, uncoated finish and is held in place via a screw-lock method. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians install this style of insert in CPMX-style toolholders on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is intended for use on non-ferrous workpiece materials, including aluminum, copper, brass, and similar N-category materials per ISO classification. The positive rake geometry and positive side clearance reduce cutting forces and minimize built-up edge on soft, gummy materials. It is suited for high-volume production environments where consistent surface finish and extended tool life between index cycles are required. Applications span automotive, aerospace, and general manufacturing sectors where tight tolerances on non-ferrous components are the standard.
Designed for use in CPMX-style insert toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 5/32-inch thick, 80-degree diamond insert with a 0.173-inch hole diameter. ANSI insert code CPMX32.52; ISO insert code CPMX09T308.
CNC machinists and tooling technicians install PCD turning inserts. Before indexing or replacing inserts, power down and lock out the machine spindle following facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the manufacturer-specified torque driver for the screw-lock fastener — do not overtighten or use impact tools on insert screws. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper contact and runout control.
