The SUMITOMO 16CDW5M is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for precision machining of non-ferrous metals and other difficult-to-machine materials. Manufactured to the DA2200 grade, this insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, providing efficient cutting geometry for high-speed finishing and semi-finishing applications. The uncoated PCD cutting edge delivers exceptional wear resistance against abrasive workpiece materials. With a 0.25-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert is suited for light to moderate stock removal in production turning environments. It is installed via screw clamping and conforms to both ANSI and ISO 13399 standards.
This insert is intended for turning operations on non-ferrous metals including aluminum alloys, copper, brass, and similar materials where high surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The DA2200 grade is rated for high wear-resistance to moderate wear-resistance with balanced toughness, making it appropriate for continuous cuts in production CNC turning centers. It is used by machinists and tooling technicians in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing applications where PCD tooling is specified.
Designed as a screw-on PCD turning insert compatible with toolholders accepting CPMX insert style with a 0.134-inch hole diameter and C-series geometry per ANSI and ISO 13399 specifications.
This insert is installed and replaced by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all motion is locked out before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key for the clamping screw and follow the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque procedure. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping components for wear or debris before seating the new insert.
