The SUMITOMO 16CDBBY is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert engineered for high-speed, high-precision machining of non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials. Built to ANSI code NFCNMX431 and ISO code NF-CNMX120404, this uncoated insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch (0.0156-inch) corner radius. The DA2200 grade PCD substrate delivers exceptional wear resistance and edge retention at elevated cutting speeds. It is installed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians working on turning centers and lathes equipped with compatible toolholders. The insert mounts via clamp and pin holding method, providing secure seating during interrupted or continuous cuts on aluminum, copper, brass, and composite workpiece materials.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning operations on non-ferrous workpieces in production and job-shop environments. Its chip breaker designation X and clearance code N make it appropriate for applications requiring tight tolerances and consistent surface finish. The NF-CNMX style geometry is commonly used on CNC turning centers where high-volume output and dimensional repeatability are priorities. Typical applications include aluminum automotive components, copper alloy fittings, and composite aerospace blanks where conventional carbide grades wear prematurely.
Designed for use in toolholders accepting NF-CNMX style inserts with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle. Compatible workpiece materials include non-ferrous metals coded N per ANSI/ISO designation. Verify toolholder clamp and pin configuration before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the turning center before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct clamp torque per the toolholder manufacturer's specification and ensure the pin locator is fully engaged before tightening. Do not use PCD inserts on ferrous metals, hardened steels, or titanium alloys, as these materials will rapidly degrade the diamond cutting edge.
