The SUMITOMO 16CDBAB is a Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of non-ferrous and abrasive materials. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance geometry. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inches (0.3750 inches), insert thickness is 5/32 inches (0.1563 inches), and the corner radius is 0.0078 inches. Grade DA2200 delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making this insert well-suited for aluminum alloys and non-ferrous metals where long tool life and consistent surface finish are priorities. Screw-type clamping holds the insert securely in compatible toolholders. This insert ships uncoated with a bright finish.
This insert is used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes where the primary workpiece material is non-ferrous metal, including aluminum, copper, brass, and similar alloys. The CCMX insert style with positive geometry reduces cutting forces and heat generation at the cutting edge. It is appropriate for production turning operations in job shops, aerospace component machining, and automotive manufacturing where surface quality and dimensional accuracy on non-ferrous parts are required. The chip breaker code X and Manufacturer Grade DA2200 target applications demanding high wear resistance. This is a single-insert package intended for professional machinists and toolroom technicians.
Designed for use in CCMX-style screw-clamp turning toolholders accepting inserts with an inscribed circle of 3/8 inches and insert thickness of 5/32 inches. Compatible with systems conforming to ANSI insert code CCMX32.50.5 and ISO insert code CCMX09T302.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing any turning insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to thread the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque — do not over-tighten, as PCD inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture from mechanical shock. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating and confirm the insert is fully seated before resuming operation.
