The SUMITOMO 166RWBW is a PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) turning insert designed for high-speed, high-hardness material removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying manufacturer grade BNC2020 with a TiN coating applied via PVD process, this insert delivers extended tool life and thermal resistance in demanding interrupted and continuous cut applications. The diamond-shaped insert features an 80-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 3/64-inch (0.0469 inch) corner radius. It is rated for negative rake geometry and is held by clamp and pin methods. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working with hardened materials specify this insert for consistent edge performance across production runs.
This insert is suited for turning cast iron, steel, and superalloy workpieces where conventional carbide tools lose edge integrity due to heat or abrasion. The ANSI code is 2NCCNGA433HS and the ISO equivalent is 2NC-CNGA120412HS, making cross-referencing straightforward in standard tooling libraries. Typical applications include finish and semi-finish turning of hardened ferrous components, bearing races, and high-temperature alloy parts on rigid CNC lathes. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both left-hand and right-hand toolholders with a CNGA-style pocket.
Designed for use in CNGA-style turning toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch inscribed circle diamond insert with clamp and pin holding. Compatible with primary workpiece materials designated H (cast iron), K (steel), and S (superalloy) per ISO material classification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a powered-down, locked-out state before any insert change. Seat the insert firmly in the toolholder pocket and verify clamp and pin engagement before resuming operation. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris that could affect seating and edge alignment. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for the clamping screw to avoid insert fracture.
