The SUMITOMO 1655FFE is a Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision machining of hardened ferrous materials, cast iron, and hard-to-machine alloys. This uncoated, neutral-hand insert features a diamond (V) shape with a 7-degree relief angle and a 0.2 mm corner radius, providing sharp edge definition and consistent surface finish on finish-turning and light interrupted-cut operations. The insert seats via screw-holding method and conforms to VCMA geometry. It carries a DA90 manufacturer grade, which is suited for high-speed, low-feed finishing passes where dimensional accuracy is critical. Machinists and CNC programmers in precision component shops are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is applied in turning centers and CNC lathes where hardened steel, bearing steel, or cast iron components require tight tolerances and fine surface finishes. The NFVCMA220.5-DA90 designation confirms its VCMA insert style, 220.5 insert size code, and DA90 series grade, making it a direct specification match for shops sourcing by manufacturer catalog number. The neutral hand orientation allows flexible toolholder pairing. It is sold individually and is appropriate for both production environments and low-volume precision work where insert grade consistency matters.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and direct specification insert for toolholders accepting VCMA-style diamond turning inserts with screw-lock retention, tolerance code M, and clearance code C.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key per the toolholder manufacturer specification when tightening the clamping screw to avoid cracking the PCBN insert body. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure proper seating and prevent premature edge failure.
