The SUMITOMO 12RJ832 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the ANSI designation SPG422 and ISO code SPGN120308, placing it in the SP series of square-profile inserts. The insert features an Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) CVD coating applied over a solid carbide substrate, which provides thermal barrier protection and wear resistance during high-speed steel turning. The cutting geometry uses a positive rake angle with an 11-degree relief angle, reducing cutting forces and improving chip flow. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible toolholders for turning, facing, and profiling operations.
This insert is suited for turning applications where steel is the primary workpiece material, corresponding to ISO P-class workpiece classification. The square insert shape, 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and 0.03 inch corner radius make it a common choice for medium-duty external turning and facing passes in production and job-shop environments. The clamp-style holding method is compatible with standard SPG-format toolholders. It is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 units per order.

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before changing inserts, confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and the machine is placed in a safe, locked-out state per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not over-torque the clamp, as this can crack the insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear before seating the new insert, and confirm proper insert orientation before resuming cutting operations.
