The SUMITOMO 10JT253 is a cermet uncoated turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a triangular insert shape with a 60-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The insert carries the ANSI designation TNPR431M and is manufactured in the T1500A grade, a cermet substrate well-suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes on steel workpieces. Machining technicians and toolroom operators install this insert into compatible TNPR-style holders as a direct replacement or maintenance item in production turning applications.
This insert is primarily intended for turning operations on steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material group P. It is sized for use in TNPR-style clamp and pin style toolholders common in both job-shop and production environments. The right-hand cutting orientation and negative rake geometry make it appropriate for external turning passes where controlled chip formation and surface finish consistency are priorities. The RM chip breaker geometry assists with chip control during steel turning at moderate to finishing-range depths of cut.
Designed for use in TNPR-style clamp and pin insert toolholders accepting a triangular insert with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and 3/16-inch insert thickness. Primary workpiece material compatibility is steel (ISO material group P).
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machining technician with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp hardware when seating the insert to avoid chipping the cermet substrate. Inspect the pocket seat and clamp components for wear or debris before installing a new insert. Always verify insert orientation and hand designation against the toolholder specification before resuming cutting operations.
