The SUMITOMO 104AAEN is a cermet-coated turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC and manual lathes. It features an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C) with a neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for both external and internal turning operations. The insert carries a T1500Z manufacturer grade applied via a PVD coating process, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous steel cutting. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches, insert length is 0.5079 inches, and the corner radius is 0.0078 inches (1/128 inch), supporting fine-finish and light-to-medium material removal passes. This insert is installed by machinists and toolroom professionals working in production and job-shop environments.
The 104AAEN is engineered for primary use on steel workpieces (ISO material group P). Its CNGG insert style with a negative rake angle and N clearance code suits general turning, facing, and profiling applications. The ESU chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation during steel turning, reducing built-up edge and improving surface finish. Typical use cases include finishing and semi-finishing passes on carbon steel, alloy steel, and similar ferrous materials in residential shop, industrial production, and contract machining settings. Compatible with standard CNGG-style toolholders designed for the CN insert series.
Designed for use in standard CNGG-style clamp and pin toolholders within the CN insert series. ANSI code CNGG430.5ESU and ISO code CNGG120402N-SU can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder systems.
This insert is seated and secured by a machinist or toolroom technician using clamp and pin toolholder systems; always power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Confirm the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before installation. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for clamp screws, and verify insert seating before resuming cutting operations.
