The STARRETT 64605 is a horizontal-style dial test indicator designed for precision measurement in machining, metrology, and quality control applications. It reads a maximum of 0.03 inches over a 0-15-0 balanced dial, with a graduation of 0.0005 inches per division for fine, repeatable readings. The 1.375-inch diameter red dial is finished in satin chrome for contrast and durability. Internal jeweled movement and a precision gear-driven design deliver consistent, low-friction response. A revolution count hand tracks cumulative travel. The dovetail mount provides rigid, secure fixturing to standard indicator holders, magnetic bases, and surface-plate setups commonly used by machinists, toolmakers, and quality inspectors.
The STARRETT 64605 fits residential and commercial machine shop environments, inspection labs, and production-floor quality stations. It is used to check runout, surface parallelism, bore alignment, and part positioning during setup and in-process inspection. The horizontal body style and narrow profile allow access in tight clearance situations where back-plunger or standard upright indicators cannot reach. The adjustable and angled head adds flexibility when orienting the stylus to a workpiece surface. One 13/16-inch (20.64 mm) long carbide contact point with a 2.00 mm ball diameter is included.
Designed as an OEM-style precision instrument for use with standard dovetail-mount indicator holders, universal magnetic bases, and surface-plate fixtures common to machining and inspection setups.
Installation is performed by machinists, toolmakers, or metrology technicians using a compatible dovetail holder or magnetic base arm. Secure the dovetail shank firmly before taking readings to prevent indicator shift. Ensure the contact point is oriented so stylus travel is as close to perpendicular to the measured surface as practical — cosine error increases as the angle deviates. Do not exceed the stated 0.03-inch measurement range, as over-travel can damage the internal gear train.
