The STARRETT 57560 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Cut to 5/32 inch thick, 3/4 inch wide, and 18 inches long, this piece ships ready for layout, grinding, and hardening operations. A2 tool steel offers a balanced combination of wear resistance and toughness, and its air-hardening characteristic reduces distortion risk during heat treatment compared to oil-hardening grades. Thickness, width, and squareness tolerances are held to +0.010 to +0.015 inches, while length tolerance is +0.25 inch. Total weight is 0.61 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, and small tooling components in job shop, toolroom, and production environments. The 18-inch length accommodates a range of blank sizes without excessive material waste. Machinists and tool-and-die makers typically use this stock in the annealed condition, then machine to near-net shape before hardening and finish grinding.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom and die-making applications requiring AISI A2 material specification.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers using appropriate tooling rated for hardened or semi-hardened steel. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow the material manufacturer's guidelines for AISI A2 tool steel and be performed by personnel familiar with proper quench and temper procedures. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat treating tool steel. Confirm dimensional requirements before cutting, as material cannot be returned to original length once shortened.
